Need to spend a couple of days away from the hustle and bustle of the big city? Then a Minnesota road trip is in order! At Centennial Auto Glass, not only do we love exploring our great state, but we’re also huge advocates for safe driving. And that means we always recommend that Twin Cities vehicle owners ensure their auto glass is chip and crack free before they hit the road.
To help you out with your trip planning, we’re sharing some of our top Minnesota road trip destinations below. And to help you stay as safe as possible on the road, we’ve also got a few helpful tips for handling auto glass repairs when you’re away from home.
North Shore Scenic Byway
Want to see some waterfalls, lighthouses, and picturesque, rocky beaches along the shores of Lake Superior? Then this 154-mile road trip should be right up your alley.
The trip starts in Duluth, winds its way up to Grand Marais, and then works its way back to the starting point. Although the North Shore Scenic Byway is a relatively short drive, there are plenty of parks and nature to explore along the way, so be sure to bring some solid footwear for wandering around outdoors.
Want to get away from the hustle and bustle and kick back at a scenic, old-school resort? Then a trip to the heart of Minnesota’s lake country might be just what you need.
Detroit Lakes, a small town located in west-central Minnesota (Becker County, to be precise), is smack-dab in the middle of over 400 lakes, all of which are located within 25 miles of town. The area is home to relaxing resorts that appear to have jumped straight out of the 60s, and it’s also close to Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, where you can see more than 250 species of birds and 40 species of mammals.
Do you enjoy traipsing around scenic, historic towns? Are you a fan of pottery or boots? Then a road trip to Red Wing, MN might be just what you need to beat the workweek blues. This town, which is located in Goodhue County along the Mississippi River, is widely known for both its namesake boots and pottery.
While Red Wing pottery is a thing of the past, the town’s famous pottery museum is home to more than 6,000 vintage ceramic creations, making it one of the largest collections in the world. You can also visit the Red Wing Shoe Store and Museum while you’re there, where you can snap a photo with the world’s largest boot.
If you’re a nature enthusiast, you’ll definitely want to trek to the top of Barn Bluff, the town’s most famous landmark, which is nearly half a billion years old. Drive up Sorin’s Bluff, too, for gorgeous views of downtown Red Wing and the beautiful Mississippi River Valley.
Caring for Your Auto Glass on Your Road Trip
Before you head out of town, it’s in your best interest to give your windshield a once-over to check for minor chips.
Driving vibrations and hitting bumps in the road can easily cause a small chip to quickly grow into a large crack or even multiple cracks. Since it’s illegal to drive in Minnesota with a cracked windshield, you should schedule a quick windshield chip repair before you take off.
If any of your vehicle windows suffer damage while you’re gone, you’ll want to schedule auto glass repairs as promptly as possible to avoid further damage. If you can find a reputable local auto glass repair company in the area, contact them for a quick estimate. If they perform mobile repairs, you may want to take advantage of the service, provided the company has solid reviews.
If you can’t squeeze auto glass repairs into your schedule while you’re away, be sure to schedule an appointment as soon as you return home. And if you’re thinking about handling the job yourself, check out why DIY auto glass repair aren’t a great idea.
